Todd* was referred to the SYMF project by his post 16 youth worker. Initially Todd suffered from a lack of motivation due to the lengthy period of time he had spent out of education/training/work. Additionally, Todd resides in a rural area of Carmarthenshire and suffers from anxiety when using public transport, this put another barrier in the path of engagement.

Through close liaison with family members, the transportation barrier was removed and Todd began attending SYMF training sessions at the Stebonheath Centre.  Whilst engaged with the training team he was successful in completing a Work Related Education unit in Interview Skills and Preparation, he also spent time developing his CV.   The team also spent time working on improving his level of motivation and involved him in a number of volunteering activities.

One Todd completed his training he moved on to an unpaid work trial to help improve his time management skills, further increase his motivation, and get him used to a regular routine as well as building work relationships.   After an initial shaky start Todd has started to make steady progress, his confidence and motivation has improved beyond recognition.  Catching public transport is no longer an issue and he engages well with all staff in both a professional and social manner.

As a consequence of Todd’ continual improvement, he recently met with CBSA’s Employment Liaison Officer to discuss finding a work placement, he is keen to find a practical/hands on placement.  As a result, a placement has been found for him close to his home, which will help with transport issues. Todd interviewed really well, drawing on everything he had learnt during training, and the local builder offered him a placement which starts next week.  We all wish him well and look forward to closely following his employment journey as he continues to learn new things and make his way in the world.
